Deal Flow Annual 2023
European asset owners showed a stronger appetite for alternatives than any other asset class in 2023 amid stubborn inflation, rising interest rates and persistent stock market volatility. While global equity markets gained 22.2 per cent in 2023, as represented by the MSCI ACWI index, it was a bumpy ride for investors throughout the year, particularly between the months of July and October. Net inflows into equities fell by more than a third in 2023, compared with 2022. And surprisingly, given rising bond yields and the constant rallying cry “bonds are back”, net inflows into fixed income more than halved year on year. Credit investments were the most sought-after, with net inflows more than tripling year on year. But partly driven by concerns about sticky inflation, European asset owners showed a strong preference for alternative assets, which captured the lion’s share of net inflows in 2023.
